On the evening of June 11th, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) unveiled plans to mandate the sale of millions of acres of public land across the Western United States. He released the text of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee’s FY25 Budget Reconciliation Bill, which will soon be reviewed by the full Senate.
The text mandates that the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forest Service dispose of between 0.5% to 0.75% of land they manage, which amounts to about 2.2 million to 3.3 million acres across 11 western states—Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming—over the next five years.
